Oh stop ... first it's pushbutton phones and now local internet access! Geese, I must be dreamin'! That's right folks, after many months of planning (and other stuff), the Laytonville prefix 984, which covers about 400 square miles, finally has local dial-up access to the Internet/World Wide Web! Rennie from MCN called the other night to share the good news. We have 8 lines flashed to 33.6K raring to go! The set-up cost is $35.00 and local on-site technical support for your initial set-up is included if you need it (@8400). The monthly fee of $19.95 gives you 100 hours of access! That's about 20 cents per hour! The package also includes your own e-mail box and access to their news-server which is being upgraded to 12 gigs! Ladies and Gentlemen, I have personally ftp'd (file transfer protocol) my server at up to 10.25Kbytes per second through this system! This system is designed to be expandable as client load and traffic warrants, as it is all digital from the Laytonville hub to MCN over on the coast. To get on board, give their business office a call at 937-1444, and they'll mail you an installation package! Note: MCN is a non-profit organization owned by the Mendocino Unified School District, Mendocino, California. MendoNet is served by MWCI and is a secure presence [website] provider. If you move to Dubuque, I can write ya a heck of a deal for local access, but until you do, this is the way to go! NET DAY '96 is upon us. Yes, this will be the second Net Day '96 this year. With California sitting down at 49th out of 50 states for school connectivity, we get another shot at it! You can check it out at http://www.netday96.com/ Well folks, we are not going to be out of this loop! I have set up Home Pages for both the Laytonville High School & Laytonville Elementary/Middle Schools! What you'll find their presently is basically placeholder stuff (I just luv that Java), but that will soon change. Several students have already indicated a very strong interest in this opportunity to do some electronic publishing, and they will be the respective school's publicatons. Owen Stiles and Kris Shelton are the student advisors and webmaster is technical advisor. You can check out their progress and email them from http://www.mendonet.com/public/lhs/ and http://www.mendonet.com/public/lems/ respectively. Students will learn basics of Web origin, Netique, copyrights, WWW overview, client-server, and basic programming skills they can apply to compose and layout their ideas, managing graphics, sounds, links, a little java-scrip, and of course imbedding some Java! All students are encouraged to participate, including writers, artists, cartoonists, I. L. M. & Disney aspirants. The future is yours, and this is your future. Have fun ... Jon Hollcraft
