The John Dougherty House

mmm ... Breakfast

John Dougherty House's bountiful breakfast is served by a crackling fire in our historic New England style keeping room. Surrounded by period country antiques, hand stencilled walls, and a view of Mendocino Bay and the Pacific Ocean, you are treated to an expansive breakfast, featuring a hot dish, such as quiche, frittata, or sausage rolls, accompanied by our famous homemade scones.

In addition, we feature a large selection of fresh fruits, many locally grown, and decorated with edible flowers from our English garden. We also serve natural honey, almond granola with yogurt and dried fruit, and a large selection of natural cereals. Beverages include custom blended fresh organic coffee, many different teas, and a local apple juice from the coastal hills of Mendocino County.

Breakfast at the John Dougherty House is a pleasant time to share your plans and experiences with the other guests and your Innkeepers. While you enjoy breakfast and chat with new acquaintances from all over the country (and often the world), you can discuss your various options for the day, whether it be canoeing up Big River or hiking along the headlands, beaches and tide pools which abound on the beautiful, desolate and rugged coast.

Background of the Innkeepers

Like many innkeepers, Marion and David Wells escaped their corporate life from one of the large metropolitan areas. While travelling throughout the western world, they became obsessed with the idea of starting a small bed and breakfast in a rural location. Having stayed in many bed and breakfasts, they were searching for the ideal location that would truly allow their guests to escape from the pressures and reality of the large city enviroment. After living 15 years in Los Angeles, they also realized there were things that people did not want to give up on a getaway trip, such as nice restaurants and upscale accommodations.

Marion and David provide their guests with everything they need for an enjoyable getaway, and at the same time giving them the privacy of accommodations that are sometimes lacking in many lodging establishments.

The Mendocino area is very attractive to guests who have an interest in the outdoors as do David and Marion, who are also avid motorcyclists and have travelled much of the western world on "two wheels". Anyone visiting Mendocino on a motorcycle would be well received and counseled at the John Dougherty House on the local riding, roads and conditions.

Comments from Guests and Publications

" Excerpt from "America's Wonderful Little Hotels and Inns"

"The inn was in tiptop condition; as clean and tidy as could be. We stayed in the Captain's Room, warm, inviting, and special with the private verandah overlooking the village and the sea - from there we watched whales spouting. There was a fine array of soaps, perfumes, shampoos, and lotions as well as big, fluffy towels to use after a bubble bath in the deep tub. We also enjoyed a bountiful breakfast and a nice chat in front of the fire with our hosts. I have to mention the 'personality cats'; twins, who gave us just the right amount of attention and affection during our stay." Joan and Larry Martens

Excerpts from our Guest Book

"This is what a B&B should be! Warm and friendly. Beautiful inside and out. Wine and Chocolates. Wonderful breakfast. Thanks a bunch. Linda H.

"Wonderful, worry free, what a place...
Within minutes of my stay here I was absolutely relaxed
I enjoyed the peace and tranquility of Kit's Cabin. It was great to be enveloped in the warmth and coziness of the John Dougherty House." Katie and Richard

"The osprey caught fish.
It also caught mice.
Dave baked us some scones.
They were mighty nice!"
Greg and Priscilla, Columbus, Ohio.

"It's much too soon to be leaving this lovely place. The motorcycle and sidecar drew us in and proprietor's charm made us stay. Our visit was blissful, breakfast with Dave and other guests was divine. We will surely be back and hope to meet Marion then. We will miss the darling cats that added sweetness to our stay."
Peace, love.Delaney and Eileen, San Francisco.

"We had a great time here on our first visit to the West Coast. The "English" cottage garden has more colour than any we've seen in England. We had a terrific thunderstorm and there were no drips at the foot of the bed. (see Dec. 27th-30th, 1992).

We enjoyed the company of Tristan and we think he enjoyed our company too from the complaints when we had to put him out at night.
We also enjoyed reading this book. Kit's Cabin thoroughly deserves all the compliments. The tastefulness and originality of the decoration is second to none."Kathey and John, Stonesfield, Oxfordshire, England
