588th ENGINEER BATTALION
(Combat) (Army)
TAY NINH

Tay Ninh, 1968; 78.3K
A map of the greater Tay Ninh area, 1968.

For the casual visitor, Tay Ninh base camp is shown on this map as "Tay Ninh West", as it was located west of the city of Tay Ninh. The 588th was located on the horizontal grid area within the south-west area of the base camp. The triangular area east of the air strip was the adjioning base camp of the 1st Philcag, a mechanized engineer unit from the Phillipines. Both base camps had complete and separate perimeter defenses which were secured at night.

The area west of the air strip, contained Headquarters 2nd Brigade 25th Infantry Division as the core command of the camp, which had a cantonment of 3,000. Probably a dozen other units were found there, including the 187th AHC, our hospital unit, artillery, PX, S-6, graves registration, and others I can't recall at this moment. Our air strip could handle a C-130, and was manned by a small Air Force detachment for traffic control, and was named "Tay Ninh West".
