The 588th Engineer Battalion Crest

The crest for the 588th Engineer Battalion was originally approved for the 388th Engineer General Service Regiment on 16 March 1943 while the unit was stationed in Canada, and includes the following symbolism.

The 588th Combat Engineer Battalion Crest

Scarlet and white are the colors of the Corps of Engineers. The wavy diagonal division of the shield represents the rivers crossed with the black line the oil of the pipeline. The cost, which is a diminutive of the bend, is the heraldic representation of the scarf of a military commander and denotes the pipe handled by the organization in maintaining and constructing the road through the Canadian wilderness. The ptarmigan symbolizes the geographical area in which the battalion has served. The silver spruce tree is emblematic of the forests of spruce found in the Canadian wilderness, its silver colors represent the snow thereon.

The words "HIC ET UBIQUE" (Here and Everywhere) are the unit motto.

I took the photo at the top of this page in 1968. It looks across the 588th Engineer Battalion from the south-western corner of Tay Ninh Base Camp, and is looking east/northeast towards Nui Ba Den. There was an artillery spotting tower outside the perimeter of the base camp in the vicinity of the 588th. I walked out to the berm and shouted up to the guys manning the tower and asked for permission to come up.
1998 pic, during 4 day (what's with all this traffic down here ;-) christmas pilgrimage
I had to negotiate 2 or 3 lines of apron and it was pretty slow going, but I made it. I climbed up into the tower and took this shot as it gently swayed in the breeze balancing a couple tons of sandbags. If you were there, you probably can recognize some of the buildings in the foreground. Battalion maintenance is toward the lower left corner and the S-4 sheds are easy to spot.
