This file contains, in order:

    1. An outline of the fields used in CACF1193.TXT.

    2. The first line of CACF1193.TXT, parsed out to show the fields
       and associated blank spaces.

    3. A narrative explanation of the data fields, with most of the
       codes used therein.

    4. An explanation of US military ranks and their abbreviations
       as used in CACF1193.TXT.

    5. A complete set of codes used in CACF1193.TXT, partly to
       complete the information in #3 above, and partly as a
       convenience to those who want a list of the codes without
       the narrative.

=============================================================================

    EXPLANATION OF DATA FIELDS

    MISSING DATA: With a database of this kind it is almost inevitable
    that some data will be missing, for one reason or another. In
    general, codes like "Z" or asterisks "*" are codes in the
    original CACCF that indicate missing or unknown data. With the
    exception of the Body field, where they are used for visual effect,
    one or more dashes "----" indicate that there was no data of any
    kind (or, in a few cases, nonsensical data) in the original CACCF.
    For example, a "Z" in the Race field indicates that the CACCF coded
    that field as "Unknown or Not Reported"; while a "-" indicates that
    there was no data or code at all in that field.

    LASTNAME: Spelling and conventions are generally as used in the
    CACCF. In general, spaces are used instead of apostrophes, and last
    name prefixes MC or Mac are *usually* separated by spaces. A search
    for any particular name should consider variant spellings. Notice
    that there are sometimes several individuals with the same name or
    initials, and one may need to refer to birthdate or other information
    to establish exact identity There are names of living veterans
    on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by mistake, but these are not
    included in this listing (see CACFINFO.TXT).

    FIRSTNAME: Generally as above. Some names were too long for the
    original CACCF data fields and were obviously truncated in the
    original file. I have taken the liberty of emending some of the
    more obvious cases, but have left alone anything that seemed to
    be in any doubt. For example, a name JOHN RICHAR would have been
    emended by me to JOHN RICHARD.

    IDNO: These are as presented in the CACCF. Many will be the
    individual's Social Security Number, used as a service number
    later in the war. Others will be service numbers as assigned
    by their particular service. Note that this is the *only*
    unique identifier in the listing (i.e., it is possible for
    there to be duplicates of *every* other data field).

    In this listing, Col. Charles H. Shelton's service number (along
    with some other personal data) is blacked out with pound signs
    (#########) since, because of his classification as a POW (see
    CACFINFO.TXT), he was nominally still alive.

    SERVICE: Listings are for military casualties only. Civilians
    are not included in the CACCF.

	    A  =  ARMY
	    M  =  MARINE CORPS
	    N  =  NAVY
	    F  =  AIR FORCE
	    C  =  COAST GUARD

    COMPONENT: Each service has several components, i.e. Regular,
    Reserves, draftees/conscripts, etc.

	    R  =  REGULAR
	    V  =  RESERVE
	    G  =  NATIONAL GUARD
	    Y  =  SELECTIVE SERVICE
	    *  =  UNKNOWN / NOT REPORTED

    RANK: See the section on ranks below. Note that the listed rank
    may represent a posthumous promotion.

    POSTHUMOUS PROMOTION: Of the 58169 names on the list, 7175
    received posthumous promotions -- that is, they were given a
    higher rank after their death. Most posthumous promotions were
    of one rank and given to junior NCOs (sergeants and corporals)
    in the Army. I do not have any information on military policy
    on posthumous promotion during the war. There are about 100
    cases where the rank, grade, and/or posthumous promotion data
    do not make sense (for example, "promotion" to a lower rank!);
    I have indicated these as below.

	    + = POSTHUMOUS PROMOTION AS INDICATED

	    & = NO POSTHUMOUS PROMOTION INDICATED IN CACCF, BUT
		  RANK/GRADE INDICATE THAT ONE MAY HAVE OCCURRED

	    ! = POSTHUMOUS PROMOTION IS INDICATED IN CACCF, BUT
		  NO PROMOTION INDICATED BY RANK/GRADE COMPARISON

	    ? = UNKNOWN BUT OBVIOUS MISTAKE

    In the above situations, it is often impossible to tell just which
    of the fields contains the mistake.

    PAY GRADE: Indicated by standard US military abbreviations, E1-E9
    for enlisted ranks, W1-W4 for warrant officers, O1-O11 for officers.
    See the section on military ranks below.

    MOS: Military Occupational Specialty. NARA cannot supply a list
    of these, and I haven't had the time to find the information;
    codes will vary between services, and data is missing for many
    individuals.

    AGE: Age in years on date of _death_. See the discussion in
    CACFINFO.TXT on the ambiguity inherent in the term "date of
    casualty".

    HOME OF RECORD: The city/town and state given here are the
    individual's military "Home of Record". This is not necessarily
    their birthplace or even place of residence at enlistment; most
    people would give one of those, but a servicemember could state
    any "home of record" that they wished. One could give a home of
    record for tax purposes, to be discharged there, or other reasons.
    I would be surprised if draftees did not sometimes give homes of
    record as jokes. Use this information carefully for this reason.

    For some reason, the CACCF lists states using two-digit number codes
    rather than the more common US Postal Service codes as used in
    this list. Missing data was coded ZZ, foreign countries are coded
    X? where ? is the first letter of the country. Canada is therefore
    code XC, Japan, XJ, etc.

    Twenty cases are missing city, state, or both from Home of Record.
    A list of the US Postal Service codes is given below.

    DATE OF CASUALTY: Given in format YYYYMMDD. Note that "date of
    casualty" can mean the date on which the individual actually died,
    the date on which they were *declared dead*, or the date on which
    they were wounded/injured if they died later. See the discussion
    in CACFINFO.TXT.

    CASTYPE: The CACCF categorizes casualties as basically hostile or
    non-hostile, and further within each type.

	   A1  =  HOSTILE, DIED
	   A2 = HOSTILE, DIED OF WOUNDS
	   A3 = HOSTILE, DIED WHILE MISSING
	   A4 = HOSTILE, DIED WHILE CAPTURED
	   B5  =  HOSTILE-MISSING, RETURNED
	   B6  =  HOSTILE, NOW MISSING
	   B7  =  HOSTILE-CAPTURED, RETURNED
	   B8  =  HOSTILE, NOW CAPTURED
	   C1  =  NON-HOSTILE, DIED OF OTHER CAUSES
	   C2  =  NON-HOSTILE, DIED OF ILLNESS/INJURY
	   C3  =  NON-HOSTILE, DIED WHILE MISSING
	   D5  =  NON-HOSTILE MISSING, RETURNED
	   D6  =  NON-HOSTILE, NOW MISSING

    Note that these codes were developed for use while the Vietnam
    conflict was in progress; not all of these will appear in the
    CACCF. Note also that *no one* is now listed as B6 ("MIA"), and
    only one person is listed B8 ("POW"), and even he has since been
    removed from that category (see CACFINFO.TXT).

    REASON: Casualties are further categorized by specific cause, as
    given by the codes below. Note that "misadventure" generally means
    "friendly fire".

	    A  =  AIR LOSS, CRASH - SEA
	    B  =  AIR LOSS, CRASH - LAND
	    C  =  VEHICLE LOSS, CRASH
	    D = GUN, SMALL ARMS FIRE
	    E  =  ARTILLERY, ROCKET, MORTAR
	    F  =  BOMB EXPLOSION
	    G  =  OTHER EXPLOSIVE DEVICE
	    H  =  MULTIPLE FRAGMENTATION WOUNDS
	    I  =  MISADVENTURE
	    J  =  DROWNED, SUFFOCATED
	    K  =  BURNS
	    L  =  ILLNESS, DISEASE
	    M  =  MALARIA
	    N  =  HEPATITIS
	    O  =  HEART ATTACK
	    P  =  STROKE
	    Q  =  SUICIDE
	    R  =  ACCIDENTAL SELF-DESTRUCTION
	    S  =  INTENTIONAL HOMICIDE
	    T  =  ACCIDENTAL HOMICIDE
	    U  =  OTHER ACCIDENT
	    V  =  OTHER CAUSES
	    Z  =  UNKNOWN, NOT REPORTED

    AIRNOAIR: Similar to "Reason" above, this code categorizes
    casualties as land, sea, or air, with general type of aircraft
    and crew status for air casualties.

	    1  =  FIXED WING - PILOT
	    2  =  FIXED WING - CREW
	    3  =  FIXED WING - NONCREW
	    4  =  HELICOPTER - PILOT
	    5  =  HELICOPTER - CREW
	    6  =  HELICOPTER - NONCREW
	    7  =  GROUND CASUALTY
	    8  =  SEA CASUALTY

    BODY: Body of casualty recovered or not. The entire POW/MIA
    issue actually revolves around this "simple" data point. See
    the discussion in CACFINFO.TXT.

	  ---  =  BODY RECOVERED
	  BNR  =  BODY NOT RECOVERED
	  POW = PRISONER OF WAR (1 entry only, see CACFINFO.TXT)

    Note that remains of servicemembers listed as BNR continue to be
    discovered and identified. The listing in CACF1193.TXT is sure
    to be at least slightly out of date.

    COUNTRY: Country in which casualty occurred.

	   CB  =  CAMBODIA
	   CH  =  COMMUNIST CHINA
	   LA  =  LAOS
	   TH  =  THAILAND
	   VN  =  NORTH VIETNAM
	   VS  =  SOUTH VIETNAM

    PROVINCE: See list of provinces below. This list was obtained
    from NARA, and does not appear to be complete.

    LENGTH OF SERVICE: Length of military service at time of casualty.
    Some records in the original CACCF contained "*", which presumably
    means "Unknown or Not Reported" as elsewhere. Other fields were
    blank, and I have coded them "--" for missing data. The entry
    "00" presumably means less than one year.

    DATE OF BIRTH: Given in format YYYYMMDD. This information is
    not available for 18 individuals, and the fields have been left
    blank in those cases. (I use DBase for editing the list, and
    it won't tolerate the dashes in a date field.)

    RACE: These codes are as provided by NARA.

	    C  =  CAUCASIAN
	    I  =  AMERICAN INDIAN
	    L  =  MALAYAN
	    M  =  MONGOLIAN
	    N  =  NEGRO
	    Z  =  UNKNOWN, NOT REPORTED

    MARITAL STATUS: self-explanatory.

	    M  =  Married
	    S  =  Single.

    SEX:  self-explanatory.  There are eight female casualties listed;
    see CACFINFO.TXT.

	    M  =  Male
	    F  =  Female

    CITIZENSHIP: Self-explanatory. There are apparently only one non-US
    citizen on the list, though there are a few cases of missing data.

    TOURDATE: This date seems to have several meanings, depending
    on the type of casualty. In most cases, it is the date on which
    the individual's Southeast Asia tour began. For some coded BNR,
    it is the date they were reported missing. For a few others,
    its meaning is not quite clear.

    PANEL/LINE: These give the position of the name on the Vietnam
    Veterans' Memorial. As described in the Directory of Names, the
    Wall is divided into Eastern and Western sections, each section
    having about 70 numbered panels (01E to 70E and 01W to 70W. Each
    panel has from one to about 130 lines, depending on its height.

    It appears that some individuals whose names were added after the
    initial dedication of the Memorial have had to be placed slightly
    out of sequence for their actual date of casualty.

    COMMENTS: These are comments entered by the DoD personnel who
    maintain the CACCF. I have edited them somewhat for format, but
    have neither added, removed, nor materially changed any.

    REFERENCE NUMBER: This number appears to be for some use internal
    to the casualty list itself. In the CACCF this number is in a series
    with the Service, Country, and Casualty Type codes, for example:

	   AVSA1 1

    is reference number 00001 for an Army casualty in South Vietnam who
    was killed by hostile action. There would also be an ACBA1 1 (for
    Army, Cambodia, hostile action), an FVSA1 1 (for Air Force, South
    Vietnam, hostile action) and so on. A number of casualties, mostly
    recent additions to the CACCF, have no reference number listed.

    PROCESSING DATE: The month and year (given as YYMM) during which
    the most recent change to the casualty record (correction of data
    or addition of a name) took place.

			       MILITARY RANKS

    All members of the US Armed forces have a "pay grade" that runs from
    E1-E9 for enlisted personnel, W1-W4 for warrant officers, and O1-O11
    for commissioned officers. These grades are considered equivalent
    between the services and receive the same pay. *Ranks*, however,
    can vary a good deal between services, and Navy ranks have little in
    common with those of any other service. There are several technical
    distinctions between the terms "rank" and "grade"; for present purposes
    it seems most useful to consider grade as one's _position_ in the
    military hierarchy and rank is one's military _title_.

    Coast Guard ranks are not included below, but for all practical
    purposes they are the same as Navy ranks.

    The table below gives a brief synopsis of US military ranks. The
    abbreviations are explained further below.

    The abbreviations above are the ones currently used by each service;
    Vietnam-era abbreviations and rank structures may have differed in
    some cases, . I have used the same abbreviation across all services
    where that abbreviation represented the same grade and rank. For
    example, SSG indicates Staff Sergeant in both the Army and Marine
    Corps, since both are grade E6, SSGT is used for Staff Sergeant in
    the Air Force, however, since that rank is a grade E5. CPT for
    Captain (O3) in the Army, Air Force, and Marines, and CAPT for
    Captain (O6) in the Navy is another example.

    Warrant officer ranks are the same for all services, and Chief Warrant
    Officer is the appropriate rank title for grades W-2 through W-4.

    Each service's ranks are outlined in more detail below.

    Army: The Army sometimes has several ranks for the same enlisted
    grade. Specialist Four, for example, has the same grade as a
    corporal, but less command authority. Sergeant First Class (E7) is
    more of an administrative rank, usually found in support units, than
    is Platoon Sergeant (E7), more common in combat units. Specialist
    grades SP4 through SP7 were in use during the Vietnam period, but
    have been phased out except for SP4. The ranks of Specialist Eight
    and Nine (SP8 and SP9) existed on paper, but were never actually
    awarded to anyone. The division of Sergeants Major into command and
    staff ranks was introduced sometime in 1968, and all are listed in
    the CACCF simply as Sergeant Major.

    Marine Corps: Marine Corps officer and warrant officer ranks are
    the same as Army ranks; enlisted ranks are given below. Staff/line
    distinctions exist only for E8 and E9. Gunnery Sergeants (E7s) are
    usually addressed as "Gunny" except by junior enlisted men or in
    very formal situations.

    Air Force: Officer and warrant officer ranks are the same as in
    the Army and Marine Corps. Enlisted ranks are given below. The
    junior enisted rank structure changed sometime in 1967, and Airman
    First Class could refer to either E4 or E3 at different periods.
    There is currently also the rank of "Senior Airman", a non-command
    E4, that was not in use during the Vietnam era.

    Navy: Except for warrant officers, which are the same as in other
    services, Navy ranks are unique, and naval enlisted ranks (ratings)
    can be rather complicated. Note that the officer ranks of Captain and
    Lieutenant are *not* equivalent to these titles in the other services.
    As noted above, Coast Guard ranks are the same as Navy ranks for
    all practical purposes. The Naval rank of Commodore is very rarely
    used at present.

    The term "petty officer" (and in some cases, "seaman") is a general
    title, and not necessarily used by any particular sailor. In practice,
    enlisted sailors have specific titles based on their occupational
    specialty (rate) and pay grade as outlined below.

    Grade E3s use one of the titles immediately below (Seaman, Airman,
    etc.); E2s use the same titles with "Apprentice" (e.g., SA = Seaman
    Apprentice, HA = Hospital Corpsman Apprentice), and E1s use "Recruit"
    (e.g., SR = Seaman Recruit, CR = Constructionman Recruit).

	      HN. . . . . . . . .Hospital Corpsman
	      SN. . . . . . . . .Seaman
	      TN. . . . . . . . .Stewardsman

    Petty officers (E4-E9) have specific titles based on an
    abbreviation denoting occupational specialty followed by 1, 2, 3,
    C, SC, or MC to denote grade. Only those encountered in the
    CACCF are listed below; it is not necessarily a full list, nor are
    all necessarily in current use. I believe GMH to be a mistake,
    since I have not found it in any standard reference.

    The third letter of three-letter codes is usually used only for
    administrative purposes and would not as a form of address.
    Therefore, both ABH3 and ABF3 would be "Aviation Boatswain's
    Mate Third Class"; ABCM would be "Master Chief Aviation Boatswain's
    Mate, etc. "Boatswain's Mate" is always pronounced _Bosun's_ Mate.

 The list of codes used in the CACCF is repeated here for convenience; some
 lengtly lists of codes (province of casualty, home of record - state)
 appear only here. Remember that, except for the BODY field, dashes "--"
 indicate that the field was blank in the copy of the CACCF that I modified
 for this list. Further, the Religion and State codes are numeric codes
 in the CACCF.
